Many opt for graduate jobs instead of internships because most internship do not pay. An unpaid internship may be one way to get some valuable work experience in a highly competitive job field but many employers take advantage of this. They not only do not pay their interns but they really do not give them any training either. They have them do all the grunt work rather than pay some one to do it. All these internships come down to is the reference. The student pays for the reference of the office they intern for with unpaid work.
So, many simply skip the internships in lieu of paid work. Students already have extremely high cost of living and the bills that come with a college degree and can not afford to be working for free. Some internships even expect the student to pay to work there as an intern.
This way of thinking simply is not acceptable any more. It is hard enough for students to find work without being expected to work for free. Some may qualify for a loan to help them survive during the internship but that is only making things worse as that debt is added on top of their student loan.
Students are standing up for them selves by holding out for paid work. They know they are worth more than slave labor for free. Internships might even be harder than jobs to get because of the hype of how important an internship is to launching a career. Many students who fall for this myth simply find themselves deeper in debt instead. The smarter students do not sell themselves short and find a paid position instead where they can work up tp a higher level over time into the career they dreamed of when they started college.
